Research Summary
In order to elucidate the role of brain glycogen, I developed highly sensitive assay methods for glycogen phosphorylase (GP) and glycogen debranching enzyme (GDE). Using these methods, I proved that GDE exists in porcine brain. The existence of GDE as well as GP in the brain explains brain glycogenolysis fully and supports the hypothesis that glycogen is a significant source of energy in this organ.
